Story#5 An Attorney Representing Women

I worked as an attorney representing marginalized groups- mainly women and workers. Women were seeking divorce, custody, or child support, workers were seeking compensation based on work injuries. I have to say that I learned from them. I learned that formalities matter.

We would like to inform you that the safe drinking water that your Ministry provided, was distributed within the City. We ask God to bless your approach and your campaign of distributing safe drinking water to the people of Sadr City, Chwader neighborhood sector 71.
We appreciate your effort to reduce pollution in drinking water that the neighborhood was suffering from. The cooperation between your staff and ours is the key to the completion of the campaign. Additionally, the distribution process covered sectors; 35, 36, 70, 72 and areas closer to Sheik Sahi Karim Nasser. Moreover, we reached out to all neighborhoods and we called on the people using all means possible including loudspeakers, to receive their share of water that you provided to them.

Today in the morning, a valiant knight from among our martyrs brigades set off to strike a pillar of disbelief, Environment Minister Mishkat. And we say to her and her colleagues that even though she survived today from this arrow, we have a lot more arrows in our quiver and we will not miss next time, by the will of Allah. Allahu Akhbar, and the honor goes entirely to Allah, his messenger, and to the mujahideen.”

A Note from Captain Hope

On April the 2^nd 2009, I received the following email from Captain Hope.

"Dr. Al Moumin,

M’am, you probably don’t remember me, but I met you in the Fall of 2005, and you had a lasting impact on me, for which I have always just wanted to say thank you.

From June to December of 2005, I was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and assigned to an Army unit (I’m was/am an Air Force Captain), and met with you and your security team in the Green Zone. My boss at the time was in charge of providing security to members of the IECI Government, and I was there to brief you and your staff on our role in helping with security. I remember meeting with you admiring the aura of respect that you commanded of everyone in the room, both Iraqi and American. We knew you were very intelligent, having earned a PhD, and being the first ever Iraq Minister of the Environment. We also knew you were very brave as the first female minister in Iraq at a very unstable time in which other IECI ministers were being targeted weekly for assassination attempts. What really sticks out in my memory that day was an account of an attack on a convoy you were travelling in a couple of days prior, obviously an attempt on your life. Your security team was taking heavy gun fire engaging the enemy and they were telling you to run to safety. Instead, you ran back into the fight to aid your security guards who were firing back at the enemy, much to everyone’s surprise! I specifically remember my boss asking you whether this story was true, and your answer was “Of course it’s true I went back to my security guards- I will never run!”

That day, I met an intelligent and insightful leader who defied those who said a that woman could not become a government official in Iraq. She put the future of her nation before her own life without any hesitation, and would fight alongside her countrymen to the very end. I fly an Iraqi flag in my office which reminds me of the courage and determination of yourself and other Iraqis that I was fortunate enough to meet and work with, and will always keep it with me. As an officer in the military, I look to it sometimes when I’m having challenges, and it inspires me to forge on and prevail and to lead with courage, as you did, and I’m sure still do.

I wish you continued success and look to the day that Iraq will be a strong, stable, and prosperous nation due in large part to the sacrifices of yourself and many other brave Iraqis, whose story needs to be told.
